Zamia is a shrub that resembles a palm tree, and you can grow this plant indoors or outside in subtropical environments. Zamia sporophylls are born in vertical rows in cones , and the megasporophyll apices are faceted or flattene not spinose.

Als je de plant wil stekken, is het voldoende om een stengel af te snijden en deze in een pot met vochtige aarde te plaatsen. Na verloop van tijd vormt de stek een wortelstok, waaruit nieuwe stengels en bladeren gaan groeien. Cardboard palm plant (Zamia furfuracea) is one of those ancient plants with a lot of character that can grow inside or outside depending upon your gardening zone.

What is a Zamia cardboard palm? In fact, it isn’t a palm at all but a cycad — like the sago palm plant. Knowing how to grow Zamia palms starts with knowing your USDA planting zone. Zamia , a genus of species of cycads (family Zamiaceae), small, stocky, fern-like plants native to tropical and subtropical America. They have a turniplike, mostly underground stem that in some species reaches metres (feet) or more in height.

Disturbing natural plants is prohibite but you can get Florida arrowroot to plant in your garden at a local nursery. It is a great plant for shady spots, edging, creating groundcover, and even for containers. How to Grow Zamia Coontie.

Zamia coontie plants are easy to grow if you have the right conditions. Zamia furfuracea is popular cycad usually available in nurseries or florist shops. Ruime keuze planten op beslist.

Not all seeds collected from a mature plant are fertile unless they are cross-pollinated. Notes: Zamia furfuracea is a “living fossil” plants, its kind surviving on earth since the time of the dinosaurs. Other names include cardboard plant , cardboard sago, Jamaican sago, and Mexican cycad (from Mexican Spanish Cícada Mexicana).

Of these are accepted species names. For example, Zamia species usually have subterranean trunks, and the leaves on Zamia plants are considerably larger than their caudexes.

Some Zamia species grow in conditions almost devoid of soil—for instance, Zamia pseudoparasitica, which grows on tree limbs, much like an orchid. The name Zamia comes from the Greek azaniae, meaning pine cone. I think how quick it grows will depend on how much sun light the plant gets (do not allow the plant to sit in direct sunlight - though). As mentioned above the plant tolerates low light, bright light and different levels of watering. However, watering depends on how much light it receives (i.e., less light = less water and more light = more water).

For years this plant was sold and grown as Zamia fischeri, but the true Zamia fischeri is a much smaller and rarer plant. Zamia vasquezii has numerous leaves with almost papery thin deltoi toothed leaflets while Zamia fischeri only sports a few leaves at a time with narrowly lancelote, toothless, leathery leaflets. Only left in stock - order soon. Click below on a thumbnail map or name for species profiles. Though all Zamia species produce crowns of foliage, there is some variance in the appearance of the leaves: some, like Zamia roesli, have a reddish tint, while those of the furfuracea are solid green.

Though most, like the cardboard palm, are terrestrial, some for instance, Zamia pseudoparasitica are epiphytes that grow in trees.
